Perhaps it is a sign of the times that one of the primary methods of community involvement in the neighborhood has been replaced by public safety fairs, including an ongoing task force and new law enforcement demonstrations. “White folks fear feet” would be an unfair characterization of genuine concerns for personal safety, but it is an interesting observation. The Neighborhood Block Residents Association is joining forces with L.A.P.D. to provide a safer community on Sunday, May 15, 11am–5pm at Moorpark Park, corner of Laurel & Moorpark.
As the weather warms up and the beaches fill with sun-bathing and music, think about the genre of music that fills the air. One of Southern California’s most distinctive sounds: Surf music. A lot of the credit goes to artists like Dick Dale and the Del-Tones. So strap your board and mark your calendar: the surf’s up at Eagles!
Last Thursday night at Eagles, a band made their musical debut. The acoustic-sound is led by Timmy Hammers. Timmy took a short break to write some new tunes and put together a band: Mark Harrington on bass and Adam Harbutt on percussion. The band has a slightly weird groove with great lyrics, and Timmy’s between-song banter puts the fun and funny. The biggest problem for the band was finding a name. The Boomer Bullys, Death Vader’s Stepchildren, and Killer Fleas fell prey to their current name—which will also change. The band will soon make the neighborhood rounds under a new and improved name: The Peasant Addicts. Check ’em out this month somewhere in the Valley.
The Undertow
The Undertow, debuted in this issue (page 8), is going into the studio to record some new tunes, as their last acoustic performance at the Boom Boom Room will be happening on Friday the Thirteenth. So if you want to check out this quintet in the intimate and true surroundings of the Boom Boom Room, that is the last day. Otherwise they might get signed, become rich and famous, and charge a whole lot of money to hear them with a million other people. ♦
